SANTOOR INSTRUMENT MUSIC TUNING & STANDARD STRINGING
VADYA Santoor musical instrument is checked, pre-tested and tuned with the stringing as follows:
Strings – 1st and 2nd : wound 0.65 mm
Strings – 3rd, 4th and 5th : steel 0.45 mm
Strings – 6th, 7th and 8th : steel 0.37 mm
Strings – 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th : steel 0.35 mm
Strings – 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th : steel 0.30 mm
Strings – 19th, 20th, 21st, 23rd and 24th : steel 0.27 mm
Strings – 25th , 26th, 27th, 28th and 30th : steel 0.25 mm

NOTE: Thicker strings can be used to expand the tonal range to the lower octave of the keynote.

VADYA Santoor is tuned to the keynote D. According to the chosen key or the Indian raga to be played, Santoor can be tuned differently. Santoor maestro Pandit. Shivkumar Sharma plays the Santoor with a diatonic tuning i.e. all the strings of Santoor tuned to the chosen scale so the strings that are not struck reverberate and resonate at the same time producing a particularly beautiful and full sound. An advantage of not striking a wrong note because all the strings are in tune.

Santoor can also be tuned chromatically in the way that the 15 notes on the right are tuned to the diatonic scale whereas the strings on the left complete the half-tones that are missing in the diatonic scale – same as corresponding to white and black keys of the Piano music instrument.
